§1The working

hours = end − start (add 24h when end < start: overnight shift) paid = hours − break decimal hours = h + minutes ÷ 60 (7h 30m = 7.5, not 7.3) monthly ≈ weekly × 4.345 (52.14 weeks ÷ 12 months)

Worked example — night security shift, 21:00 to 06:00

end < start → 06:00 + 24h = 30:00 30:00 − 21:00 = 9h, minus 45m break = 8h 15m = 8.25 decimal hours 6 nights/week × 8.25 = 49.5 h → 1.5 h over the 48-hour line = overtime at 2×

The wrap-around is where spreadsheets silently fail — a bare end − start gives −15 hours and a payroll error nobody catches until the worker does.

§2The gotchas

The 4.33 rule

A month is not 4 weeks. Multiplying weekly hours by 4 undercounts by ~8%; the honest factor is 4.345. Salary-to-hourly conversions hide the same error in reverse.

Break rules are law, not preference

Indian shops & establishments acts typically mandate a rest interval (commonly 30–60 min after 5 hours) and cap the spread-over of a shift. Whether that break is paid is the contract's call — which is exactly why this calculator makes it explicit.
