§1The working

daily hours = out − in − break (out < in ⇒ overnight, +24h) week total = Σ daily hours overtime = max(0, week total − threshold) gross pay = regular × rate + overtime × rate × multiplier

Worked example — 6-day week at ₹300/hour

Mon–Sat 09:30–18:00, 30m break = 8h/day → 48h regular Sun off. One extra Saturday-evening hour on top → 49h total pay = 48 × 300 + 1 × 300 × 2 = ₹14,400 + ₹600 = ₹15,000

The last hour earned double because it crossed the statutory 48 — which is why accurate punches matter more at the margin than anywhere else in the week.

§2The gotchas

India's overtime line is 48/week and 9/day

Under the Factories Act and most shops & establishments acts, work beyond 9 hours a day or 48 a week earns double the ordinary rate. The default threshold above reflects that; adjust it to your contract if you're outside those acts.

Rounding is where wages leak

Payroll systems round punches — commonly to 15 minutes. Round-down-only policies quietly shave hours; the fair convention is round-to-nearest. Totalling exact minutes, as here, shows what rounding is costing.
