§1The grammar

Additions and subtractions must agree on what they measure — “4kg − 2.3 lb” converts the pounds into kilograms before subtracting; “5 kg + 3 litres” is refused rather than guessed. The answer takes the first operand's unit, with common alternatives shown alongside. A trailing “to sq yd” / “in km” converts the final result.

Worked example — the mixed-unit grocery fight
4kg - 2.3 lb 2.3 lb = 2.3 × 0.4536 = 1.0433 kg 4 − 1.0433 = 2.9567 kg (≈ 6.52 lb)

Same idea for land: “2 guntha to sq yd” → 242 sq yd, because a guntha is 121 sq yd — a number worth knowing before a Telangana or Karnataka plot negotiation.

§3The gotchas

Percent is directional

“15% of 2400” is 360. “2400 + 15%” is 2,760 — the percent applies to the number it follows. And the classic: adding 18% then subtracting 18% does not get you back — 100 → 118 → 96.76. To remove GST, divide (use the GST calculator).

Regional land units aren't universal

Guntha (≈ 121 sq yd) is consistent across Karnataka–Maharashtra–Telangana, but bigha is deliberately not supported — it swings from ~1,600 to ~2,500 sq m by state, and a silent guess would be worse than no answer. Use the area converter, which lists both major bighas explicitly.

Temperatures don't add

“30°C + 10°C” is refused on purpose: temperature is a scale, not an amount — conversions (“98.6 F to C”) are supported, arithmetic isn't. If you're mixing a hot and cold liquid, you want a weighted average, not a sum.
